Secrets of the Forest (Title Change from What's in the Green, Dark Woods)
Published in Hardcover by NorthWord Press (July, 1996)
Authors: Muriel K. Steffy Lipp, Mark Coyle, and Muriel Steffy Lipp
Average review score:

Wonderful book for kids and their tree-hugging parents
I confess to some bias, since I have been married to the author for over four decades. She wrote it about 20 years ago, when we were camping in upstate New York. In fact, the protagonist, Roscoe, got his name from a nearby town. This story, with its superb illustrations, gives a reality to the experience of looking and listening in the forest. Life is all around you, but you have to show patience and understanding in seeking it out. I am looking forward to a sequel

Selections from the Female Spectator (Women Writers in English 1350-1850 (Cloth))
Published in Hardcover by Oxford Univ Pr on Demand (February, 1999)
Authors: Eliza Haywood, Patricia Meyer Spacks, Patricia Ann Meyer Spacks, Elizabeth H. Hageman, and Susanne Woods
Average review score:

Review of The Female Spectator
This is not the entire Female Spectator (which would be very long indeed, and much more pricey). Instead, it is an affordable, carefully chosen selection from Eliza Haywood's _Female Spectator_ (a magazine-like publication that ran for several years). The introduction is top-notch. I own this book and refer to it often. This is a great book to read a little at a time. It gives wonderful insight into issues of 18th-century life for women (marriage, manners, and morals). I highly recommend it.

The Senses of Walden
Published in Hardcover by North Point Press (June, 1981)
Average review score:

Cavell's reclaiming of Thoreau and Emerson as philosophers.
More than a discrete work of literary criticism, this work plays an important part in Cavell's ongoing philosophical project. If Cavell's earlier work had Wittgenstein and Austin as involving a modernist break with the dominant Anglo-American philosophical tradition of positivism, then this work exemplified how analytical philosophy might continue. Cavell finds in the word conscious text of 'Walden' a linguistic economy complimentary to the idea of a logic or necessity to ordinary language. The American Transcendentalists are recast as philosophers who anticipate the turn away from metaphysics to the ordinary and everyday to be found in Wittgenstein. At the same time, as newly recovered American philosophers, they rehearse an encounter between English (empiricist) and German (idealist) philosophy before the split between these strands became institutionalized. 'The Senses of Walden,' then, is a key philosophical text by Cavell as much as a work of literary criticism on Thoreau. It is the text of a philosopher unable to completely give up an analytical training, but equally unwilling to ignore the broader cultural issues that such training obscures. Paul Jenner, University of Nottingham.

Set Free - A Caregivers Daily Devotional Journal
Published in Spiral-bound by Lily Publications (May, 1998)
Authors: Martha C. Wood, Mary Bruno, and Pat Jessee
Average review score:

Helpful and encouraging
"Set Free" by Martha C. Woods has been a long awaited help for all of us who are caregivers. I find that for myself, there are several people who feel the way that I do and are involved in similar situations. The fact that there is a place to write down my feelings for that particular day only enhances it. I believe that anyone who has to take care of a family member or friend should have this book to look to when times become difficult or unsure. I also appreciate the fact that this book gives the reader valuable scripture references to follow up on. Martha Wood did an excellent job and a marvelous work!!

Seven Great Religions
Published in Paperback by Theosophical Publishing House (December, 1990)
Author: Annie Wood Besant
Average review score:

7 Great Religions within India
While admitting to great ignorance before reading this compelling book, I humbly suggest that Annie Besant, through her research and insight, made me a qualified neophyte to discuss the seven great religions of India she covers, namely:
1. Hinduism
2. Zoroastrianism
3. Jainism
4. Buddhism
5. Christianity
6. Islam
7. Sikhism

Originally entitled Four Great Religions in 1897, three were added in 1901 - all from lectures delivered in India. Her bibliography cites over seventy sources from which she generously offers quotations and context, from the Al QurĂ¥n to the Zendavesta.

The historical coverage is valuable, but alone is not the purpose of her book. Rather, she provides unmistakable linkage among the great religions, their laws, and purpose. Specifically she seeks to support religious study and comparisons of:
* The Founder - whose life and character are impressed on the religion
* The exoteric religion - thought to appeal to the masses of the people
* The philosophy - thought to appeal to the learned and the cultured
* The mysticism - defined as expressing the universal yearning of the human Spirit for union with its source

Enjoy this book because it suggests a celebration of religion seen as a process that supports the advancement of all humanity, given its current condition, constraints, and culture at the time it was founded.
